T-City Szolnok

T-City is a joint development and innovation project of Magyar Telekom's and Szolnok city with county rights, that was launched in 2009 with the objective to test the provision of cutting-edge telecommunication, IT and content services to the inhabitants of the Szolnok.

The project’s mission is to present and utilize the opportunities offered by ICT in all areas of life - healthcare, education, public administration, tourism, culture, transportation, economy. As a result it supports tourism, certain security services, optimization of households’ energy consumption (e-metering), the citizens’ healthy lifestyle and the very popular City Card which can be used for multiple purposes.

The products and services to be introduced in the mass-market simplify administrative processes, boost the city's economy and help developers with useful feedback: the participants of the program are residents, institutions and municipality organizations that help the perfection of the services with their practical experience.

As Magyar Telekom’s subsidiary, worthy to its market-leading role in the Hungarian info-communications sector, T-Systems Hungary’s portfolio and project experience enable the company to transform Hungarian cities into digital cities in projects similar to the one implemented in Szolnok.

Innovation from close

The success of the T-City project in Szolnok lies in the fact that the people supported the initiative and were interested in it - pointed out the mayor of the city.We interviewed Ferenc Szalay on recent years’ experience and the feedback of the people in Szolnok and their further development plans.
Ferenc Szalay

„The municipality strives to work with the use of modern devices thus we found that one of the areas that can be developed with modern tools is the field public administration services. Magyar Telekom’s T-City program was trying to find such solutions in the relationship of the city and the inhabitants that are already used by many people in their everyday lives but have not been tried yet in the public sector. This was perfectly in line with our plans. The success of the T-City project lies in the fact that the people in Szolnok supported the initiative and were interested - pointed out Ferenc Szalay, mayor of the city.

Why did Szolnok’s leaders thought it was a good opportunity to join the T-City initiative?
The municipality strives to work with the use of modern devices thus we found that one of the areas that can be developed with modern tools is the field public administration services. Magyar Telekom’s T-City program was trying to find such solutions in the relationship of the city and the inhabitants that are already used by many people in their everyday lives but have not been tried yet in the public sector. This was perfectly in line with our plans.

To what extent did the city's institutions and the local people supported the design of the developments?
I think the program would not work if the people of Szolnok did not support it. Our institutions are very actively participating in the T-City program. Just one example: the primary school in Szandaszőlős helped a lot in the fine-tuning of the school entrance system. As an operating test environment they were very useful in the perfection of the City Card or the home guard system, that are already on the market.

It is not an exaggeration to say that one of the most popular services is the City Card. What is the feedback from the people in Szolnok?
The City Card, unlike the system generally used in Hungary - thanks to T-City - is an intelligent service that includes many modern info-communication features. More than 1000 people use it already and it helps several hundreds of families to use public transportation discounts for young mothers.

T-City does not only offer convenience solutions but it also plays a significant role in reducing households’ energy consumption expenses. What is the status of the project in this respect?
Within the frame of the smart metering test E.On has replaced the electricity meter of 500 families with smart meters that provide precise information on the actual consumption of households. This is the first step in the process where the electricity service provider may offer more favorable prices to consumers as the provider may know and plan the necessary quantity of electric power. However, this also requires the elaboration of the regulatory background.

What other areas would you involve in the T-City concept in Szolnok?
With the spread of smart devices our daily routines could be simplified. I would mention here energy consciousness, remote control of the energy consumption or the Mobile City smart phone application that can be used for mobile parking and also to report potholes or illegal disposal of waste. With the use of the MobilTárca (Mobile Purse) and virtual bank cards people in Szolnok can pay in shops with simply nearing their mobile phone to the PayPass terminal. All plastic cards can be integrated in the MobilTárca application and it can also be used in public transportation and to purchase tickets, discount coupons or in loyalty programs. The time may come soon when what we can leave our purses at home. Another new opportunity for the city is Telekom’s innovative development, the e-Voting application.
